What are heat-blued watch hands, and how do you tell real bluing from paint?

Heat-blued watch hands are steel hands that were heated until the steel itself changed colour. Nothing is added. Heat clean carbon steel and a very thin oxide film grows on the surface, and as that film thickens the steel runs through straw yellow, brown, purple, blue and then grey. Blue is one stage in that run. Take the heat away at the right moment and you keep it. Miss it and you are looking at the next colour.

That is the whole of it, and it explains most of what a buyer needs to know. The colour is not lying on top of the metal the way paint does. It is the metal's own surface. The film is thin enough that light reflecting off the top of it interferes with light reflecting off the steel underneath, and what reaches your eye is what is left over. It is the same reason a film of oil on a wet road shows blue and violet.

Why the blue changes when you move the watch

Because the colour comes from interference and not from pigment, it depends on the angle you look from and on the light you are standing in. In flat indoor light, heat-blued hands often read almost black, and you can lose them against a dark dial. Turn towards a window or a single bright lamp and they come up as a strong blue with violet in it. Tilt the watch and the blue travels along the hand.

Pigment does not behave that way. Painted hands are much the same blue in the kitchen as in the sun. That is the most useful test a buyer has, and it costs nothing: look at the hands in a dim room, then take the watch to a window. If the blue barely moves, you are probably not looking at heat.

Why the timing is unforgiving

The colour keeps moving for as long as heat is going in, and steel that thin heats fast. There is no pause at blue. Heat unevenly and one end of the hand is ahead of the other. Leave a fingerprint on the polished surface and the oil leaves a mark in the colour. A speck of dust gives you a spot. None of it can be corrected in place. To try again you take the oxide off, polish the hand back to bare steel and start from the beginning. Every attempt costs a little material, and our hands are 0.2 mm thick to begin with.

Heat bluing also hides nothing. Whatever surface is under the oxide is what you see through it. A file mark you had convinced yourself was invisible on bare steel will show once the hand is blue. That is why the filing and the polishing take longer here than the bluing does.

What else gets sold as "blue hands"

Painted or lacquered hands, where the colour is a coating on the surface. Coated hands, where the colour is deposited industrially. Chemically blued hands, where a solution converts the surface of the steel instead of heat doing it. And on some watches the blue part is not steel at all: aluminium takes colour by anodising, which is a different process again. That one turns up in our own watches too, though not on the hands. The ground of the Cornerstone dial is glass-bead-blasted anodized aluminium.

None of these are dishonest. Chemical bluing is a long-established technique, more even and more repeatable, and it does not put a thin part through a heat cycle. Painted hands are perfectly good work when the maker says they are painted. The trouble is only that the word "blued" gets used loosely enough to cover all of them. You are entitled to know which one you are buying.

How can you tell, without taking the watch apart?

Use a loupe and look at the edges. Heat colours everything the heat touched: the top face, the flanks, the underside, the inside of the hole the hand sits on. A coating usually sits on the top face and thins where it wraps over an edge, so you may find a fine bright line of bare metal along the profile. Under magnification a coating tends to show a texture of its own, a lip where it pooled, a little orange peel, a trapped speck. Heat blue has no texture of its own. It takes whatever was underneath.

Small differences between the hands are worth knowing about too. Hands blued individually rarely match perfectly, so a slight difference in tone between the hour hand and the minute hand tells you something about how they were done. It is not a fault.

Photographs are close to useless here. White balance and editing will turn any blue into any other blue. So the last check is simply to ask: are the hands heat blued, chemically blued, or painted? It is one question, and the answer tells you two things, what the hands are and how carefully the seller talks about their own work.

What we do, and where heat bluing lets you down

Our hands are cut from carbon steel, 0.2 mm, in a shape taken from a sword. They are filed and polished by hand, then blued by heat and taken off it by eye, at the moment the colour arrives.

Here is the part that does not go on a spec sheet. Heat bluing is fragile. It is an oxide film, and a slipped screwdriver or a careless hand change can take a line straight through it, and it cannot be touched up. The hand goes back to bare steel and gets made again. What is under the film is carbon steel, and carbon steel rusts if it meets moisture. That is one reason the case, the gaskets and the crystal matter more than they look like they do. The Cornerstone watches are rated 3 ATM, and that number is about keeping the inside dry, not about swimming.

So no, heat bluing is not the practical choice. It is slower, more delicate and less repeatable than a coating. We do it for the meaning the harder method leaves in the watch. If that is not what you want from a watch, buy the painted hands with a clear conscience. Just make sure you know which you are getting.
